CargoSmart Spearheads Development of Innovative Solutions and Talent Recruitment
One of the world’s leading shipment management software solutions providers develops industry-leading shipping solutions and nurtures data science talent to facilitate re-industrialization in Hong Kong

September 15, 2015 — CargoSmart held a “Big Data, Big Opportunities Conference cum Technology Talent Recruitment Day” on September 12 at Hong Kong Science Park that attracted more than 500 participants. The conference showcased cloud-based big data analytics capabilities and encouraged the younger generation to collaboratively transform the shipping industry. In addition to featuring industry experts who shared their insights on big data analytics and the latest market developments, CargoSmart also held an onsite career exhibition to recruit data science professionals.

As a leading provider of global shipment management software solutions, CargoSmart moved its headquarters to Hong Kong Science Park in 2008 and has since leveraged Hong Kong’s competitive advantages such as its comprehensive infrastructure and deep industry experience to capture global business opportunities. The company has developed innovative shipment management and vessel operations solutions, while monitoring over 90% of the world’s container capacity to increase overall operational efficiency for the industry.

Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), as an event co-organizer, has bridged CargoSmart with potential partners within its ecosystem of innovation and technology. CargoSmart has thus far established connections with R&D institutions to elevate its cloud computing and data mining technology.

“We are pleased to partner with CargoSmart to facilitate the development of innovative technology in the shipping industry by tapping into our ecosystem and nurturing young talent,” said Peter Yeung, Head of Information & Communications Technology cluster, HKSTP. “We are also honored by CargoSmart’s decision to establish its Global Vessel Voyage Monitoring Center (GVVMC) at Hong Kong Science Park. The center monitors complex sea traffic data round-the-clock, a major breakthrough in Hong Kong that once again exemplifies HKSTP’s commitment to promoting ‘re-industrialization’, driving the development of a knowledge-based economy and strengthening Hong Kong’s value as an innovation hub by introducing new technology to traditional industries.”

Professional data analysts and experienced vessel captains operate the GVVMC. The GVVMC monitors vessel data 24/7 and provides predictive analytics. CargoSmart also collaborates with overseas partners and clients to develop customized shipping solutions that best meet their business needs by leveraging the monitoring center’s big data analytics platform.

“Transshipment trade and container logistics play an important role in Hong Kong’s economic development. Although we have seen increasing challenges to the shipping industry in Hong Kong in recent years, Hong Kong remains competitive,” said Lionel Louie, chief commercial officer of CargoSmart. “We analyze complex shipping data and use machine-learning to understand and predict shipping route patterns, enabling us to create more innovative solutions. We are also committed to attracting and nurturing technology talent that can bring our technological innovations to the next level.”

With an eye on Hong Kong’s eight universities and the technology talent nurtured by them, CargoSmart plans to recruit more than 50 data analysts this year, covering data warehousing, data mining, data integration and analytics, data visualization and more.
